Set Up Device Groups and Device Templates

Device groups and templates provide the structure behind scalable fleet operations. Groups control targeting, while templates define capabilities and telemetry behavior that impact charts, automation, and consistency.

What to Click and Do Next

1. Open Settings > Devices > Device groups.
2. Click New Device Group, enter name, and click Create.
3. Open the group and choose membership mode:
   • Dynamic for rule-based membership
   • Static for manual device selection
4. Configure membership and verify Results.
5. Optionally set linked Device template for the group.
6. Copy Device Group Webhook if onboarding automation uses it.

Create and Configure Template

1. Open Settings > Devices > Device templates.
2. Click New Device Template, enter name, and click Create.
3. Use Add Capability and Add Component to define model behavior.
4. Configure telemetry settings, including inactivity timeout and unit.
5. Click Publish DTDL when definition is ready.
6. Save changes.

Validation Checklist

1. Group membership returns expected devices.
2. Template can be selected during enrollment.
3. Devices using template render telemetry/charts as expected.

Common Issues

• Empty group results due to restrictive dynamic rules.
• Missing charts caused by template telemetry definitions not configured.
